Why is there such a huge price difference on DVDs at Wal-mart vs Best Buy?
Star Trek fan collection at Wal-Mart $13, at Best Buy $34. Simpsons seasons 1-6 at Wal-mart $15 each, at Best Buy $29 each. Appaloosa at Wal-mart $4, at Best Buy $15. Why is there such a huge price difference on DVDs at Wal-mart vs Best Buy? Okay I know the quick answer is to say that Wal-mart demands lower prices from manufactures which is why everything there is so cheap. But there are two problems with this answer.

1. Wal-mart actually has very expensive prices on other products when comparing them to other stores, just look at the price of collectible trading card games at Wal-mart then compare it to prices at a Gaming store. Look at the price of a lot of Wii, PS3, or X-Box games and compare them to a store like Game Stop. Even groceries at Wal-mart are expensive compared to grocery stores that strictly sell food. Do you see the pattern here? Specialty stores that sell just one type of item usually sell it cheaper than Wal-Mart, certainly Best Buy qualifies as this type of store so it should follow the same pattern and sell cheaper DVDs and Blu-Rays.

2. I once asked a Wal-mart employee why it was cheaper to buy the three Jurassic Park movies separately than it was to buy the same three movies in a bundled pack. (The same is true for several movies series sold at Wal-Mart.) She told me that the prices are not decided by Wal-mart but by the manufactures of the movies. So the manufacture of The Simpsons decided it would be better to sell there DVDs for $15 at Wal-mart and not Best Buy?

Don’t get me wrong I think Best Buy is a great store but who is responsible for deciding their prices and how does a consumer like myself let them know how I feel? (The people who work at Best Buy do not care, it’s obvious when they themselves suggest I check out Wal-Mart first for a price comparison.)

I’ve noticed this and wondered the same thing.
My conclusion – best buy credit is easy to get
You’d be surprised how many people will pay double for something just because they can spend 5 years paying for it. (and then pay triple).

I think it may be in part because Best Buy has a lot bigger selection of DVDs than Wal-Mart, and their pricing may reflect the cost of keeping a lot of slow-moving inventory on hand. Wal-Mart usually just sells what I’d call ‘popular’, as in high turnover, items. But ever since Circuit City went out of business, Best Buy’s pricing is pretty much what I’d expect from a place selling DVDs that aren’t readily available elsewhere… pay the price or don’t get it. They used to have regular sales where the back seasons of TV shows would be half off… they hardly ever do now.
buz | Jan 30, 2010

Walmart, by cutting their movie etc.prices attract a further section of the buying public who will frequently buy at least a few other items while there. One stop shop! There bye they increase their turnover and over-all profit margins.

One True Thing
One True Thing (1998)

IMDB rating: 6.90

Plot: One True Thing is a family drama revolving around a dying mother’s final months in the care of her daughter. Ellen Gulden’s father rebukes her for not caring enough about her mother to quit her job, move back home to Upstate New York, and leave her soulmate behind to fend for himself in their tidy New York apartment. But, when she succumbs under the strain of guilt and does as he asks, it appears that he is too busy to carry his part of the load. In fact, it begins to look like Ellen’s father is more concerned with who is going to keep his life running smoothly than who will tend to his poor wife as she struggles with cancer. George Gulden is a gifted professor and English department head, but he is an unrealized novelist. His novel, “Come Back Inn,” is still unfinished after many years of torturous self-editing and rewrites long after the advance he received from his publisher is spent. Still, he basks in the reflected glow of more famous and successful writers with whom he maintains tenuous ties. This realization humanizes him for Ellen who has always revered her father as something of a literary giant in spite of his occassional daliances with graduate students. Kate Gulden, dying of cancer at only 48, loves life, and loves her children and her husband. When her suffering finally ends from an overdose of morphine, the District Attorney suspects Ellen of having helped her mother to end her life. In the end, though, it seems to be Kate who still nurtures them, somehow even from the grave.

heartbroken greiving and in desperate need of advice?
me and my boyfriend of four years broke up… i am truely devastated… it has been like an emotional rollercoaster that i can never get off…we both argued a lot towards the end he started lying to me and hiding things…i started getting insecure and aggressive because i just couldnt take anymore. New years eve we has a massive row….everyone ended up hating me and yelled at me from his side…his best friend yelled at me telling me to leave him alone…my ex’s dad text my mum and then my mum rang back in my defence shouting and it all got really really messy.

I cut contact from then on and about 2 weeks later he text me
telling me not to think bad of him…i said that we will always be friends and instantly he was telling me how hurt he was and how maybe some day we could get back together…..from then on he text and text and rang and we both started getting on again without anyone knowing….he lead me to think we were getting somewhere…and now ill never know if that was actually true because as soon as his dad found out on monday through the phone bill….he backed off and told me that it couldnt work…and that we couldnt go back. (his dad is controlling) but even if you love someone that much..you wouldnt want to let them go….. i am now absolutely heartbroken. i said my goodbye and that ill never see or speak to him again..because he has built me up soo many times and then knocked me down after i let him in…and i will never no why.

i said my goodbye tuesday night…he said goodbye but because i let him back in so many times i dont think he believes it really was goodbye. I got a missed call of an unknown number last night…i know it was him. hes even been talking to another girl on the phone and hes still trying to find out if he can contact me….. why do this? Im heartbroken and grieving because he has truely messed me up. i said to him i would have fought for it to work? the only way it can work now is if he comes to my door and begs me or goes out of his way to get to me :’(

you shouldn’t take him back if he’s messing with your heart like that. It’s wrong. And don’t let him keep you hanging on.It’s not fair to be treated that way.if he really liked you he would prove it.Not reach you through another girl. And constantly making up excuses to blow you off.You shouldn’t give in constantly. Then he will win.and walk out on you again. After you heal. You should find a better guy that will respect you and treat you right.

Rock (Rock, Metal, Metalcore, Punk, Emo, etc.) Vs. Rap.?
Ok 1st off. This is my opinion. Second don’t tell me I don’t understand music because, yes, I know almost everything about almost every type of genre. I am very musically diverse so I have done my research and I know what I’m talking about.

Ok the discussion. When I say rap, I mean Hip-Hop. I’m talking about mainstream artists today. I love old-school rap and artists like Eminem and P.O.S. and like artists that have intelligent brains. First off, Rap requires the use of little to no musical talent. Hate to tell you, it’s just talking. Whether you want to admit it or not, it’s true. An argument used in these conflicts usually is that rap is poetry. Yeah. It is. But, newsbreaker here, a lot of rap artists don’t even write their own songs. If you want good poetry go read a compilation of famous peoms. The next argument is that "Metal" isn’t diverse and only white males can suceed. Ok I sure as hell see a lot of whites in rap, right? The truth is go look at Killswitch Engage (black singer), Oceano (black singer), All That Remains (female guitarist), and We Came As Romans (asian drummer). There are many cultures in metal. The next is that they say metal only deals with Satanism and Killing. Yep. Thats it. Im a Christian and I listen to a few hundred bands who only write Satanic lyrics. Wrong. Why don’t you look up songs like Wake Up, Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, Still Searching, Priest and the Matador, Empty Walls, Lost and Found, Shipwreck in the Sand, Dez Moines, Louder Than Thunder, Downfall of Us All, Homesick, etc. Also they say Black Sabbath and Slayer are all about Satanism. Look into the meanings of songs you retards. Black Sabbath teaches that the Devil is something that should be feared, not worshipped. Though Slayer does have Satanic songs, all of them are Christians. It is just a topic that interests them. Also, the majority of Mainstream rap deals with: money, sex, drugs, or violence. And before you use my own point on me I understand that not all of it deals with these subjects, but the majority of it does. 99% of Lil Wayne’s songs are. And don’t deny it because it’s true. The next part is about vocals. The argument is that it takes no talent to scream, metal sing, etc. Well I scream. It takes a huge toll on your throat. As far as I’m concerned I talk a ton every day, and fast. It takes no special talent. Maybe if a 2 year old rapped, I’d be impressed. Now the final point. Instruments have been a fundamental to music since it began. Rap hardly ever uses instruments. The only thing it does use are programmed drum beats, which means a computer is doing all the work.

If you have anything to say, say it. One thing I made sure I did not do in this argument in this argument was try to insult the fans of rap. That is something they try to do by calling us freaks, emos, braindead, etc. and I wanted to rise above that level.

It’s an opinion. Who cares what other people listen to? Just listen to what you like and let others listen to what they like. I don’t think you’ll change anyone’s mind with this question.
Listen to Death | Jan 02, 2010

There is no such thing as a bad genre, only bad artists.

Unlike most people who post "ROCK OR RAP" questions, you seem to understand that. That makes me happy. ^_^ Frankly, I like the old stuff like Eminem. I love Eminem. He made me understand a few things with his music. The new stuff…

I’m a writer, I understand the complications and work required to make a poem–or story–good and new artists, like Lil Wayne for example, don’t use anything I’d consider creative. There are two Poetry types, in my opinion. There are those who use literary devices and make poems that make you think. And there are those who go "sat, bat, cat" and just spit out some "The cat is fat. The cat has sat". stuff that is right in your face, no creativity needed whatsoever.

To make this short, I think that Rock as a whole-genre has more creative and good artists that Rap does, when you stack it all together. Rap does have some good artists, but Rock just has more.

Omg! Never in a million years, did I ever think that I would find someone who I can musically agree with 100% Everything that you say in there is true, all of it! and screw the people who will insult you over this. The one point that im still trying to argue with everyone today, is that Hard rock/Metal isn’t all satanic. Yes, there are bands like that everywhere, not everyone believes in god. I do and I don’t want to listen to anything that’s going to insult him. For instance, Evanescence, I love that band, The music rocks, the members are awesome and Amy Lee (lead singer ) is truly inspiring, But, still today people continue to throw insults at her and them, left right and center, saying, There all goth/Emo, she’s satanic and only worships the devil. Wrong! all the members are religious, and im pretty sure the song ‘The only one’ is written about god himself "All our lives we’ve been waiting, for someone to call our leader, all your lies, Im not believing, Heaven shine a light down on me" – beautiful! not satanic at all. Hell if they call her lyrics satanic, I would hate to see what people would say about mine! I don’t want to insult rap either, and like you, I loved the old school rap, That Rocked!! and I miss it. Because the majority of rap today…..well actually most music now, is all about, Sex, drugs, and how awesome they think they are. I miss the lyrics that were poetic, and beautiful, and I know that they will come back one day, we just have to be patient, and support those who are trying. I admire that you scream, I sing rock, not metal But I can imagine how hard screaming would be, it would be a huge strain on your voice, People that don’t sing, don’t seem to understand that your voice gets tired, and can’t be pitch perfect all the time. Well I understand that, and I know, Screaming DOES take a lot of work and is something that can be mastered if ones persistent enough.

As for people calling Metal heads Brain dead, Emo’s and freaks. As far as im concerned, they can bring it! I can take all the criticism they can give!
Thank you for writing this, People like you give me hope that good music still has fans, and I appreciate it a lot. You know, I could sit here and ramble on about how much I appreciate you for asking this, but I think I’ve written enough, and I thank you for reading this far. Lol
but hands down,
ROCK METAL RULES!!!!! other genres can come close, but none can rise above. :)
Jade | Jan 02, 2010

I just had to say that not everyone in Slayer is Christian. Kerry King is an atheist.
Anyway I don’t see the point in showing rap fans any respect because I’ve never seen any of them show metal respect. Most rap sucks anyway.
Rap is one of the least complex styles of popular music. The drum beats are always played in a 4/4 time signature or no time signature at all. The music is made on computers, and it usually sounds terrible. The production is over-processed.
The song structures in hip hop are almost always verse, chorus, verse chorus.
You are right about the vocalist being just talking.
Metal is more diverse than rap that’s for sure. There are a lot of Hispanic metal musicians, and there’s a huge underground metal scene in Asia.
Almost every rapper is black, with some Hispanic’s. There are very few white rappers and even less Asian rappers.
Michael | Jan 02, 2010

I listen to punk rock. (I am punk) and I personly think that punk actualy has a message. Like to be who YOU are and not to just conform into society. Metal, rock and emo also has many messages and talent is all over those music genres. Rap acording to modern day rappers requires money, s.luts, drugs. The music comes in after all of that because to them its all they want which is why they make well… rhymes. All it takes to rap is to be able to rhyme.

PUNK AIN’T DEAD!!!

What do you when you're around someone SO often, but the little conversation you have is out of obligation?
Step One: Meet a boy at church, super new to Christianity and still having doubts. Absolutely NO romantic interest due to having a crush on someone else. Constantly thinking " Wow, this guy is going to make an amazing FRIEND."

Step Two: Meet boy’s sibling, she’s awesome. Spend the night the next week.

Step Three: Continue having absolutely no romantic interest in Boy until his sibling falls asleep as we spend a majority of the night talking. Mutual likeness.

Step Four: Get "saved", decide that there’s just not enough room for Jesus and a boyfriend at the moment. Apoligize sincerely, and suggest we pick things up at a later date (two months) if both parties agreed.

Step Five: Decide to wait three months instead, no problem.

Step Six: Decide to wait a year

Step Seven: Realize it’s not going to happen months later. Be kind of upset that Boy didn’t just tell you that upfront especially when you asked him to, and feel stupid for having to call him ( literally 10 words) to confirm.

Step Eight: Continue Liking him because adolescence sucks

Step Nine: Slowly stop caring so much. But be irked. On one hand, you still sorta like him but you know his faults and for the most part dislike the way he treats and talks to you these days and think to yourself " Why would I want that?" on the other, he’s an absolutey fantastic friend, but you don’t really like ‘like’ him, but you are both subject to a ton of time together due to circumstances that are NOT under subject to change. The only conversation you have with him is either absolutely necessary or out of obligation, you would still like that to change because you’re supposed to be family (’cause everyone in the church is family).

Step Ten: Understand that you can’t call him or talk to him and sort this all out, because you’ve looked so stupid so many times this year trying to do things of that nature and you don’t want another example of your foolishness. Also, if it turns out that he absolutely loves it this way, what a stap in the chest, didn’t you have enough of that after that 10 word conversation?

What do you do?
And should you decide to swallow your pride and sort it out, what would you say? and how? phone? in person? facebook?

Great Expectations (1946)

IMDB rating: 8.20

Plot: Pip, a good-natured, gullible young orphan, lives with kind blacksmith Joe Gargery and his bossy, abusive wife ‘Mrs. Joe’. When the boy finds two hidden escaped galley convicts, he obeys under -probably unnecessary- threat of a horrible death to bring the criminals food he must steal at peril of more caning from the battle-ax. Just when Pip fears to get it really good while they have guests, a soldier comes for Joe who takes Pip along as assistant to work on the chains of escaped galley-convicts, who are soon caught. The better-natured one takes the blame for the stolen food. Later Pip is invited to became the playmate of Estelle, the equally arrogant adoptive daughter of gloomy, filthy rich Miss Havisham at her estate, who actually has ‘permission’ to break the kind kid’s heart; being the only pretty girl he ever saw, she wins his heart forever, even after a mysterious benefactor pays trough a lawyer for his education and a rich allowance, so he can become a snob in London, by now ‘ashamed’ of simple Joe. Only after years in idle wealth, Pip learns Havisham is not his benefactor as he assumed, and both her story and those of his real sponsor and Estelle…

A question for people familier with classic British Literature?
From this List:

Jane Austen – Pride and Predudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility
Charlotte Bronte – Jane Eyre
Emily Bronte – Wurthering Heights
Agatha Christie – The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
Joseph Conrad – Hearts of darkness
Charles Dickens – A Tale of two cities, Great Expectations
Daphne Du Maurier – Rebecca
Frederick Forsythe – A Day of the Jackyl
Thomas Hardy – Return of the native, Tess of the D’ubervilles
P. D. James – Unnatural Causes
James Joyce – Portrait of the artist as a young man, The Rainbow
C. S. Lewis – Out of the silent Planet, Perelandra, That Hideous Strength
Baroness Orczy – The Scarlet Pimpernel
George Orwell – 1984
Mary Shelley – Frankenstein
J.R.R. Tolkein – The Silmarillon, Book of lost tales
H. G. Wells – The Time Machine, The War of the worlds, the invisible man
Herman Wouk – The Caine Mutiny
Jules Verne – The Mysterious Island

Okay, yeah from that list
1) which ones have you read (or if you’ve read most, which havent you read)
2) what is your favorite ( you can pick two or three if its too hard to narrow down)
3) what would you consider to be the easyest read (easy to follow plot, not huge words) i ask this because english classes were never my strong point (i have to read one of these for a brit lit class)

thanks

hiya. :D .

1) Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, A Tale of Two Cities, and 1984
2)1984 was amazing.
3) 1984.
Pride and Sense are very densely worded (and I found them boring, so I couldn’t get through them easily). And Tale of Two Cities, while good, is also complex..I had ta read through each chapter a couple of times to make sure I knew what was going on

Smile [grand finale] | Feb 04, 2010

1) I’ve only read Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Charles Dickens, Mary Shelley and George Orwell.

2) 1984 is my favourite out of the ones of read from this list.

3) I love reading but was never any good at English classes and I followed 1984 really well but if I had to pick the easiest I’d probably go with Frankenstein. Plus it’s a really good read.
Emma | Feb 04, 2010

Going for "haven’t read" – the Conrad, Forsythe. Joyce, Wouk and Verne. And the last CS Lewis.

Favourite? Probably Rebecca or Scarlet Pimpernel. I love Tolkien, but those two books of his are very hard going compared to Lord of the Rings.

Jane Eyre is pretty easy to read, but Scarlet Pimpernel is more fun. You might want to go read a brief description of the French Revolution first, or the backstory will be too confusing. It’s basically a superhero romance – except that it’s set in 1792.
cathrl69 | Feb 04, 2010

1) read most
2) Rebecca,Tess of the D’urbervilles, Portrait of the Artist as a Young man
3) Rebecca or Heart of Darkness. Rebecca was actually used in espionage against the Germans in WWII, but it’s easy reading.
Sue Straka | Feb 04, 2010

1) Read almost all of them. Seen the movie for the ones I haven’t.
2) Favorites: The Austen, Bronte, Dickens, Hardy and Joyce novels.
3) Easy read is probably PD James, who I’d categorize as a mystery writer and not a "classic" like most of the others on your list.
I'm with Coco | Feb 04, 2010

I can’t believe your teacher even put Heart of Darkness on the reading list :(

I have read most of that list but enjoyed Jane Eyre, Silmarillon, Frankenstein

Frankenstein was great and its a short read. Look for college literature classes that have posted their critique of the books on line to help you understand the book. There is more than just the face value of what you read but a lot being spoken about human nature and social life back then.

4weeks, 2 days and spotting with mild cramping? Warning: TMI?
I just found out I was pregnant with my first on Christmas Eve. AF was due 12/26. The same day I found out I was pregnant, I had some dark red spotting without cramping that I eventually dismissed as implantation bleeding. It only lasted for a couple hours and was mostly not even enough to be noticed on my underwear or when I wiped. The only reason I even noticed it was when I was taking a shower and was cleaning inside there.

Now (AF is 4 days late) I am having spotting again, but this is more than before. Still not enough that I would call it a full-on bleed, but still worrysome to me. It started as some old, brown blood in my undies and has increased in amount. It is also now a pink/light red color. MY BF and I have been getting over a cold and have not had sex for 3-4 days because we haven?t felt up to it, so it is not due to that. I?ve been running a fever the past few days (has never gotten past 101.5, and as it doesn?t go above 103 it?s not considered dangerous to the baby).

I also have some very mild cramping which I did not have on 12/24 when it was spotting. I also took a hCG about half an hour ago, it was still VERY faintly positive, and fainter than most of my other tests I have taken. I realize that this may be in part due to not using the first morning urine, but I would have expected it to be a little darker than it was.

This is our first pregnancy and we?re unsure what to expect, and are unsure if this is normal or not. I?m scared to death that I am miscarrying and if I am, it would break my heart. I guess I?m just looking for some honest opinions and maybe a little hope that everything will be OK. Has anyone had a similar experience and if so how did it turn out? What do you ladies think is going on here?

I don?t know if its time to tell my BF or not: he?s so overprotective and worried about the pregnancy and I don?t want to tell him that I?m worried that I may be micarrying unless I?m fairly certain that I am because I don?t want him to worry unduly. But I also don?t want to go through this alone if I am.

Thanks and God bless.
Thanks Liz and everyone so far. Not what I wanted to hear, but I do apprechiate the honesty.

I really don?t think its necessary to go to the ER. I know that this early even if I am miscarrying, there is nothing they can do to stop it. If I am, I prefer to just wait it out in the comfort of my home and not sitting in some hospital.

I have three kids, and had four miscarriages. What you explained sounds to me like you may be miscarrying. Any bleeding is not normal. I did bleed in all three of my full term pregnancies, so it is not abnormal either. The thing that bothers me is that you say the blood was brown, but then is was pink and red. The brown blood is old blood, and not usually a problem, but if it is red and/or pink, there is probably something wrong. I would tell your BF and call your doctor in the morning. THere is nothing they can do for you, but since you have a fever, you could have an infection. You need to see a doctor.

I agree with Liz

Bleeding, cramping, fever are all huge warnings when ur pregnant. when you complain about any pains or anything to the doctor they ask if you’ve been bleeding/cramping/fever because thats the sign something is very wrong. Go to the doctor asap.

I would go to the ER. Tell them you are pregnant and having some bleeding that you are worried about. They may be able to do an internal scan to make sure the sac and placenta are ok. It’s too early to see the baby.

Good luck.
