Rock (Rock, Metal, Metalcore, Punk, Emo, etc.) Vs. Rap.?
Ok 1st off. This is my opinion. Second don’t tell me I don’t understand music because, yes, I know almost everything about almost every type of genre. I am very musically diverse so I have done my research and I know what I’m talking about.
Ok the discussion. When I say rap, I mean Hip-Hop. I’m talking about mainstream artists today. I love old-school rap and artists like Eminem and P.O.S. and like artists that have intelligent brains. First off, Rap requires the use of little to no musical talent. Hate to tell you, it’s just talking. Whether you want to admit it or not, it’s true. An argument used in these conflicts usually is that rap is poetry. Yeah. It is. But, newsbreaker here, a lot of rap artists don’t even write their own songs. If you want good poetry go read a compilation of famous peoms. The next argument is that "Metal" isn’t diverse and only white males can suceed. Ok I sure as hell see a lot of whites in rap, right? The truth is go look at Killswitch Engage (black singer), Oceano (black singer), All That Remains (female guitarist), and We Came As Romans (asian drummer). There are many cultures in metal. The next is that they say metal only deals with Satanism and Killing. Yep. Thats it. Im a Christian and I listen to a few hundred bands who only write Satanic lyrics. Wrong. Why don’t you look up songs like Wake Up, Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, Still Searching, Priest and the Matador, Empty Walls, Lost and Found, Shipwreck in the Sand, Dez Moines, Louder Than Thunder, Downfall of Us All, Homesick, etc. Also they say Black Sabbath and Slayer are all about Satanism. Look into the meanings of songs you retards. Black Sabbath teaches that the Devil is something that should be feared, not worshipped. Though Slayer does have Satanic songs, all of them are Christians. It is just a topic that interests them. Also, the majority of Mainstream rap deals with: money, sex, drugs, or violence. And before you use my own point on me I understand that not all of it deals with these subjects, but the majority of it does. 99% of Lil Wayne’s songs are. And don’t deny it because it’s true. The next part is about vocals. The argument is that it takes no talent to scream, metal sing, etc. Well I scream. It takes a huge toll on your throat. As far as I’m concerned I talk a ton every day, and fast. It takes no special talent. Maybe if a 2 year old rapped, I’d be impressed. Now the final point. Instruments have been a fundamental to music since it began. Rap hardly ever uses instruments. The only thing it does use are programmed drum beats, which means a computer is doing all the work.
If you have anything to say, say it. One thing I made sure I did not do in this argument in this argument was try to insult the fans of rap. That is something they try to do by calling us freaks, emos, braindead, etc. and I wanted to rise above that level.
It’s an opinion. Who cares what other people listen to? Just listen to what you like and let others listen to what they like. I don’t think you’ll change anyone’s mind with this question.

There is no such thing as a bad genre, only bad artists.
Unlike most people who post "ROCK OR RAP" questions, you seem to understand that. That makes me happy. ^_^ Frankly, I like the old stuff like Eminem. I love Eminem. He made me understand a few things with his music. The new stuff…
I’m a writer, I understand the complications and work required to make a poem–or story–good and new artists, like Lil Wayne for example, don’t use anything I’d consider creative. There are two Poetry types, in my opinion. There are those who use literary devices and make poems that make you think. And there are those who go "sat, bat, cat" and just spit out some "The cat is fat. The cat has sat". stuff that is right in your face, no creativity needed whatsoever.
To make this short, I think that Rock as a whole-genre has more creative and good artists that Rap does, when you stack it all together. Rap does have some good artists, but Rock just has more.

Omg! Never in a million years, did I ever think that I would find someone who I can musically agree with 100% Everything that you say in there is true, all of it! and screw the people who will insult you over this. The one point that im still trying to argue with everyone today, is that Hard rock/Metal isn’t all satanic. Yes, there are bands like that everywhere, not everyone believes in god. I do and I don’t want to listen to anything that’s going to insult him. For instance, Evanescence, I love that band, The music rocks, the members are awesome and Amy Lee (lead singer ) is truly inspiring, But, still today people continue to throw insults at her and them, left right and center, saying, There all goth/Emo, she’s satanic and only worships the devil. Wrong! all the members are religious, and im pretty sure the song ‘The only one’ is written about god himself "All our lives we’ve been waiting, for someone to call our leader, all your lies, Im not believing, Heaven shine a light down on me" – beautiful! not satanic at all. Hell if they call her lyrics satanic, I would hate to see what people would say about mine! I don’t want to insult rap either, and like you, I loved the old school rap, That Rocked!! and I miss it. Because the majority of rap today…..well actually most music now, is all about, Sex, drugs, and how awesome they think they are. I miss the lyrics that were poetic, and beautiful, and I know that they will come back one day, we just have to be patient, and support those who are trying. I admire that you scream, I sing rock, not metal But I can imagine how hard screaming would be, it would be a huge strain on your voice, People that don’t sing, don’t seem to understand that your voice gets tired, and can’t be pitch perfect all the time. Well I understand that, and I know, Screaming DOES take a lot of work and is something that can be mastered if ones persistent enough.
As for people calling Metal heads Brain dead, Emo’s and freaks. As far as im concerned, they can bring it! I can take all the criticism they can give!
Thank you for writing this, People like you give me hope that good music still has fans, and I appreciate it a lot. You know, I could sit here and ramble on about how much I appreciate you for asking this, but I think I’ve written enough, and I thank you for reading this far. Lol
but hands down,
ROCK METAL RULES!!!!! other genres can come close, but none can rise above.

I just had to say that not everyone in Slayer is Christian. Kerry King is an atheist.
Anyway I don’t see the point in showing rap fans any respect because I’ve never seen any of them show metal respect. Most rap sucks anyway.
Rap is one of the least complex styles of popular music. The drum beats are always played in a 4/4 time signature or no time signature at all. The music is made on computers, and it usually sounds terrible. The production is over-processed.
The song structures in hip hop are almost always verse, chorus, verse chorus.
You are right about the vocalist being just talking.
Metal is more diverse than rap that’s for sure. There are a lot of Hispanic metal musicians, and there’s a huge underground metal scene in Asia.
Almost every rapper is black, with some Hispanic’s. There are very few white rappers and even less Asian rappers.

I listen to punk rock. (I am punk) and I personly think that punk actualy has a message. Like to be who YOU are and not to just conform into society. Metal, rock and emo also has many messages and talent is all over those music genres. Rap acording to modern day rappers requires money, s.luts, drugs. The music comes in after all of that because to them its all they want which is why they make well… rhymes. All it takes to rap is to be able to rhyme.
PUNK AIN’T DEAD!!!
